The department of medical and surgical Nursing was established in the year of 2005 with Under Graduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc (N) help the student to understand the principles and concepts of Medical Surgical Nursing to acquire knowledge and professional skills in caring for patients with Medical and Surgical disorders in variety of health care settings at home and hospital.

The postgraduate programme was established in the year 2010. It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of Medical and Surgical nursing. It will help the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as a medical and surgical nurse. It will further enable the students to function as a nurse educator, manager and clinical researcher in the field of Medical and surgical Nursing.

PHILOSOPHY

Medical and surgical nursing department believes that nursing contributes to the health service in vital and significant way in the health care delivery system. It aims at identifying the health needs of the people, planning and providing quality care in collaboration with other health professionals and community group. It also aims at provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of care to people across their life span in wide variety of health care settings based upon application of basic concept and principles derived from the physical biological, behavioral sciences, medical and surgical nursing.

OBJECTIVES
  1. Apply the knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative system in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors which affects the health status of individuals and groups.
  3. Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups.
  4. Utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care.
  5. Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decision in all situations in order to provide quality care.
  6. Conduct need based research studies in various settings and utilize the research findings to improve the quality care.
  7. Demonstrate awareness, right attitude in caring individuals and families with acute and chronic conditions.

The Department of Community Health Nursing was established in the year 2005 with under graduate programme. The teaching programme of B. Sc Nursing students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of Community Health Nursing and acquire knowledge and develop professional skills in caring the clients in the community.

The post graduate programme was established in the year 2011. It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in-depth knowledge in the field of Community Health Nursing. It will help the students to appreciate the patient as a holistic individual and develop the skill to function as a specialist in Community Health Nursing. It will further enable the students to function as an educator, manager and researcher in the field of Community Health Nursing.

PHILOSOPHY We, the family members of the department believe that,
  • knowledge about the Community Health Nursing will ensure competence in functioning at different levels of health programmes implemented at the Community.
  • a desirable attitude in students form the basis of amalgamation of knowledge into practice in applying a holistic, comprehensive nursing care of individuals and families both in rural and urban communities.
  • the graduate nursing students at all levels of learning will integrate the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains with the application of evidence based community education in upgrading the critical thinking skills and standards required for legal and ethical Community Nursing practice.
OBJECTIVES At the end of the Community Health Nursing course, the students will be able to :
  • function effectively as a Community Health Nurse at various levels of health care delivery system.
  • work effectively as a Community Health Nurse by integrating the principles of various levels of prevention.
  • plan and organize various clinics including the principles of supervision, education and effective communication.
  • demonstrate the right knowledge, skill and attitude in caring for individuals and families in the community.
  • exhibit accountability in teaching and supervising the primary health care personnel at various levels of health care delivery system in imparting a Community Health Nursing care.
  • record and report vital and day to day events that occur among families and communities. Clinical Experience is provided at PHC’s of Noornad, Chunakkara, Venmony and Palamel and Family Welfare Centre, Mavelikara. Field visits are provided at Rural Health Centre, Gandhigram and RUHSA, CMC Vellore.

Josco College of Nursing has wide wing of department of Mental Health Nursing which invite the students to the doors of vast experience of varying degrees of Mental Health Nursing. The department was established in the year of 2006 with undergraduate programme, flourished by the commencing of Post Basic B. Sc Nursing programme by the year 2010 and stretched to its full form by the M. Sc Nursing in the year, 2011.

The courses offered will help the students to understand the basic principles, advanced concepts of mental health nursing, helps the students to acquire in depth knowledge in current trends and issues in psychiatric nursing and enable them to render quality care to clients in various settings and functions effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

AIM

The aim of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing programme in nursing is to prepare the students to assume different career roles as nurse specialists, educators, researchers and administrators in a wide variety of health care settings

OBJECTIVES At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

The department of child health nursing was established in the year of 2005 with under graduate programme. The department of child health nursing helps the students to understand the modern approaches to child care develops in depth understanding of prevention and nursing management of common health problems of neonates and children. They provide holistic care in clinical and community setting.
